REPORT OF WORLD CANCER DAY
WORLD CANCER DAY is observed every year on 4th February to raise awareness about cancer, itsprevention, early detection and treatment. It arises to unite people across the world to fight against burden of the disease. The theme for this year, “UNITED BY UNIQUE” highlights that all individuals experience with cancer is different and deserves personalizedcare and attention This day also emphasizes the importance of collective efforts by healthcareprofessionals, institutionsand the community in cancer prevention and control.
World Cancer Day was celebrated by the Department Of Public Health Dentistry, Azeezia College Of Dental Sciences And Research and NSS unit (NSS/SFU/KLM/KUHS/3) by organising various activities such as Awareness programs and dental screening camps in association with KERELA STATE EXCISE AND STAFF ASSOCIATION (KSESA), pamphlet distribution ,photography competition for interns and undergraduates and Social media campaign .As a part of this programmes various posters were made by Third year BDS students. The posters on the topic causes of oral cancer, detection of oral cancer, prevention of oral cancer, signs and symptoms of oral cancer and general cancer awareness were made and displayed near the reception area of the college. An awareness video on oral cancer was also prepared to educate the public about harmful effects tobacco and the importance of early detection. A photography competition was done associated with World Cancer day “organisation with theme “UPSIDE DOWN PHOTOGRAPHY“ and more than 12 students participated in this competition. A dental camp was also organised as part of the world cancer day activities to promote oral health awareness among the community.
The camp was conducted by the Department Of Public Health Dentistry at Excise department Kollam Division, Chinnakada. The camp was inaugurated by the Assistant Commissioner of Police. An awareness talk was delivered by Dr. Aarathi Vijayan, Head of the department of Public Health Dentistry. She emphasized the importance of oralcancer prevention and early detection to the staff and public at the camp. A total of 30 patients attended the camp , where 18 patients where referred to Department Of Conservative Dentistry And Endodontics, 17 referred to Department Of Periodontology, 1 Patient referred to Department of Prosthodontics Crown and Bridge, and 4 Patients were referred to Department of Oral And Maxillofacial surgery. In addition to this world cancer day pamphlets were also distributed among the people including auto drivers, other members of general public to spread awareness about cancer and its prevention.
