As a part of world blood donor’s day the Department of Public Health Dentistry
and National Service Scheme unit (NSS/SFU/ KLM /KUHS/3) of Azeezia Dental
College organized a visit the college blood bank on 16 th June. The NSS volunteers
and final year students of PHD attended the visit. The students were introduced to
different equipments and procedures done during blood donation and blood
transfusion. The myths and facts about blood donation were explained by the staff
nurse.
The session started with an introduction to different selection criteria of donors. A
consent form will be filled by the patient/donor before donating the blood to know
whether he/she has any systemic disease or illness or allergies. The staff in the
blood bank explained in detail about the consent procedure and how it is done.
The blood bank also has different sections: –
1) Collection room: – Blood is collected into a plastic bag for blood collection
and storage which contains anticoagulants or buffers etc. which allow
storage of blood.
2) Sample checking room: – Donor screening for HIV, HBsAg, HBcAb, HCV,
HTLV, Syphilis.
3) TTI Section: – It is a virus, parasite or other potential pathogen that can be
transmitted in donated blood through a transfusion to a recipient
4) Component separating section: – The blood components are separated by
centrifugation. The top layer, containing the plasma and bottom layer
containing the RBC is extracted. The buffy coat layer between the RBC and
plasma contains platelets and WBC.

To encourage the blood donation, daily one of our volunteer volunteered to donate
his blood. Overall the experience was very informative.
“Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives”.
