REPORT OF WORLD CANCER DAY
World Cancer Day is celebrated on 4th February, every year. It aims to promote awareness on cancer as a public health issue and to strengthen action towards improving access to quality care , screening , early detection , treatment and palliative care. This year’s theme (2024) makes the “Close the care gap” which is about understanding the inequities in cancer care and taking actions to make the necessary progress to address them.
As a part of World Cancer Day the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Azeezia College of Dental Sciences and Research, Kollam organized following programs and activities on 3rd and 5 th February 2024 in QSSS Kollam and GVHSS Kulakada from 10:00am to 1:00 pm and a “Purple Ribbon Campaign” at Azeezia Dental College.
An Awareness talk and oral screening camp was organized by Department of Public Health Dentistry and Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at QSSS, Kollam from 10 am to 1pm. The awareness talk was given by Dr. Kannan Venugopal (Reader, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Azeezia College of Dental Sciences and Research, Kollam) based on Oral cancer, its prevention, detection and treatment. A total of 32 patients attended the oral screening camp.About 23 were referred for scaling, 11 for restoration, 9 for extraction, 8 for orthodontic treatment and 7 for prosthetic rehabilitation to Azeezia Dental College. A “Street Play” was also organized on the basis of “Etiology of Cancer” by the interns in the Department of Public Health Dentistry.
As a part of World Cancer Day, on 5th February 2024 a “PURPLE RIBBON COMPAIGN” was organized in the Azeezia College of Dental Sciences and Research by the Department of Public Health Dentistry as a part of awareness for the public. The campaign was inaugurated by the Dr Radhakrishnan Nair, Principal and Dr Rathy, Vice Principal. The ribbons were distributed to all the departments’ staffs, interns and students. An awareness talk and oral screening camp were organized at “GVHSS KULAKADA” on 5 th February from 10:00am to 2:00pm by the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Azeezia College of Dental Sciences and Research, Kollam. A well detailed awareness talk was given by Dr.Priya (Senior Lecturer, Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics) on the topic “Early detection of Oral Cancer and their signs and symptoms” for 9th and 10th standard students. A total of 362 patients were screened. About 149 were referred for scaling, 98 for restoration, 27 for extraction, 173 for orthodontic
treatment to Azeezia Dental College. All the students and staffs were well cooperative and the
camp concluded around 2pm.
