REPORT OF WORLD CANCER DAY

To commemorate World Cancer Day 2023 , an oral  cancer screening programme was held by the  Department of  Public Health Dentistry and NSS unit(NSS/SFU/KLM/KUHS/3), Azeezia college of Dental sciences and Research  , from 10.00am to 2.00pm on Wednesday 8th of February 2023,  at Jyothi Nikethan Women’s College, Kollam.

The Programme was jointly organized by the Ashakiranam cancer care campaign and Quilon social service society.

This oral screening programme was an initiative aimed at early detection and awareness of oral cancer among public, which can lead to early diagnosis, thus increasing the survival rate of patients. The programme began with a silent prayer and welcome speech was delivered by Rev Fr Manoj Antony, Director of JNWC. The presidential address and inauguration of the event was done by Rev Dr  Baiju Julian, Director of Quilon social service society. The speaker also set us an example by explaining one of his life experiences with the cancer patients which helped us to really understand the same.The keynote address was presented, by Mrs. Leelamma Edward, principal of JNWC and she also explained briefly about causes, symptoms and, risk factors etc of oral cancer. Dr. Aarathy Vijayan, Head of The Department of Public health dentistry, Azeezia College of Dental Sciences and Research felicitated the event . Dr Geethu Gopal , House surgeon  of Azeezia College of Dental Sciences and Research conducted an awareness class on oral cancer. She gave an elaborate idea about causes, symptoms, early detection and management  of oral cancer which is very useful in present scenario. It was a very informative session.

Almost 45 students participated in the oral screening programme which was  conducted under the guidanceof Dr Aarathy Vijayan ,with the presence of 6 House surgeons ,Dr. Kuriakose,Dr. Marvath, Dr. Merin, Dr Minzia , Dr Geethu and,Dr. Megha from Azeezia college of dental sciences and research, kollam.

To make the programme more interesting and memorable there were other sessionslike ribbon distribution and thumb printing which was a creative idea to set  public awareness.The inauguration of ribbon distribution event was done by Rev Dr Baiju Julian by pinning the ribbon on Rev Fr Manoj Antony.And after the inaugural session ribbons were distributed to all other participants. Also The Thumb printing programme wasinaugurated by RevDr Baiju Julian.Everyone took part in the same.

The programme concluded with the vote of thanks speech by Ms Aishwani A.V 2nd year, BA English, JNWC.
