REPORT OF WORLD NO TOBOCCO DAY 2026
In commemoration with World No Tobacco Day, Department of Public Health Dentistry, Azeezia College of Dental Science & Research & NSS Unit (NSS/SFU/KLM/KUHS/3) organized a series of awareness and outreach activities to educate the people about the adverse effects of tobacco use and the importance of tobacco cessation. World No Tobacco Day, observed annually on 31st May, is a global initiative led by the World Health Organization to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and nicotine addiction. The day aims to encourage individuals to quit tobacco consumption and promote healthier lifestyles through education, prevention and community engagement.
An oral health screening and awareness camp was conducted on 26/05/26 at Akshara Tutorial Centre, Vadakkemukku, Kollam as part of the observance. A total of 37 patients were examined during the camp. Individuals requiring further evaluation and treatment were referred to Azeezia Dental College for comprehensive dental care and follow-up management. The camp also included awareness sessions highlighting the oral and systemic health hazards associated with tobacco use.
An informative seminar titled “Breaking the Illusion: Say No to Nicotine” was delivered by Dr. D. Rajan, MD (Associate Professor), Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Azeezia Medical College on 29/05/26. The session focused on dispelling common misconceptions about nicotine and tobacco products, emphasizing their addictive nature and detrimental health effects. The seminar encouraged participants to make informed decisions and adopt tobacco-free lifestyles. The seminar provided scientific evidence on the harmful effects of smoking, vaping and other tobacco products, emphasizing their impact on physical health, mental well-being and overall quality of life. The participants gained a deeper understanding of how tobacco industries often create misleading perceptions about nicotine consumption, particularly among young people. It inspired participants to become advocates for positive health practices and to contribute towards creating a more informed and healthier community.
A large-scale awareness programme was also conducted at Kollam Beach in association with the Indian Dental Association on 31/05/26: The activities included:
Flashmob: A creative and engaging flashmob performance was organized to attract public attention and spread awareness regarding the dangers of tobacco consumption
Exhibition: Educational exhibits displaying the harmful effects of tobacco on oral and general health were showcased to the public.
Brochure Distribution: Informative brochures containing tobacco cessation messages and preventive health information were distributed among visitors to enhance public awareness. A car rally from Asramam Ground to Kollam Beach was organized to promote awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and encourage a tobacco-free lifestyle. The rally drew active participation and helped spread the message among the public. An awareness session was conducted by Mr. Aravind Ghosh (District Coordinator, Vimukthi Mission, Kollam), who highlighted the health risks associated with tobacco use and the importance of making healthy, informed choices.
The World No Tobacco Day programmes conducted by Azeezia Dental College successfully promoted awareness regarding theharmful effects of tobacco andnicotine use. Through community outreach, educational seminars and public awareness activities, the institution reaffirmed its commitment to improving public health and encouraging tobacco-free living.
