National Cancer Awareness Day is observed across India on November 7th. It was first observed on November 7th each year and was first announced in 2014 by the Union Health Minister to spread awareness about cancer prevention; early detection, and the importance of timely access to treatment. The main objective is to increase awareness ; promote early detection ; encourage health check-ups ; support access to treatment; highlight research and innovation.
As a part of this day, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Azeezia College of Dental Sciences and Research and NSS unit organized a campaign at a Pain and Palliative care centre, Chinnaka, Kollam. It aimed at educating patients, caregivers, and the surrounding public about oral cancer; emphasizing the significance of early detection ; prevention, and improved access to treatment . The brochures were designed to raise awareness about oral cancer. These brochures were distributed to the public as well as patients in the palliative care and it highlighted about the prevention; early signs; risk factors, and the importance of regular screening. Also additional information about local health resources and support systems available for cancer patients was provided. The overall goal was to enhance the understanding among the visitors; providing them with actionable insights to help prevent and detect cancer early.
In conclusion, by conducting this awareness program on National Cancer Awareness Day, the Department of Public Health Dentistry and NSS unit has made a substantial contribution to promoting oral cancer prevention and early detection.
