REPORT ON NATIONAL ORAL HYGIENE DAY
National Oral Hygiene Day in India is celebrated on August 1st every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. G.B. Shankwalkar, a pioneer in Department of Periodontics.The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of oral hygiene and its impact on overall health. Various dental institutions and organizations across India organize events to educate the public on proper oral hygiene practices and preventive measures against dental and systemic diseases.
As part of the National Oral Hygiene Day 2025, Department of Public health Dentistry, Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology and NSS unit (NSS/SFU/KLM/KUHS/3) took the opportunity to spread awareness and importance of oral health in the community by conducting various activities at S N College, Chathannoor on 30th July 2025. Several activities like oral screening camp, health education, demonstration of brushing technique and pamphlet distribution were done by the faculty, interns and post graduate students. On the day of the camp, the team conducted an oral screening for the college students. The camp started at 10:00 am. A total of 51 participants were screened and out of that 50 patients were referred to Azeezia Dental College for further treatment. The health talk on “Oral Hygiene and its maintenance” was given by the post graduate student Dr.Devu from the department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology .An interactive session was done among the students regarding Oral hygiene among to create awareness among them. After the health talk brushing technique was demonstrated by the postgraduate student Dr.Bhavya. Pamphlet distribution was also done by interns to encourage the students to maintain oral hygiene and provide information about common oral diseases. The camp concluded at 1:30pm.
The primary objective of the camp was to spread the message of Oral health and its importance and to understand the public about the prevention of oral diseases. Nevertheless, the dental fraternity observes that the Oral hygiene of an average Indian has improved in the last decade.
